The city is ready for its first game of the season at Athletic Park.

The baseball park’s opening was long delayed due to spring flooding (60 percent of the grass was killed in the field.) However, it is slated to open for the Chaska Cubs vs. Shakopee game at 6 p.m. this Sunday.

“Initially, we anticipated the park to open about the first of July. But the Chaska Public Works crew has worked extremely hard over the past month re-seeding, fertilizing, aerating, and cleaning the entire facility to the point where it can open earlier than predicted,” notes a recent city newsletter.

Not open quite yet is the new concession stand. The entire facility should be open by the Cubs’ June 30 game.

Hopefully the park will now stay open.

Due to recent rains, the crest in Jordan is projected to reach 24.6 feet by June 21. Chaska usually measures 2 feet lower, 2 days later – placing the crest at 22.6 feet in Chaska, or 4.6 feet above flood stage by the end of next week.

Athletic Park’s outfield gets wet at the 5 feet mark.

Just got this flood update from Public Works Superintendent Tim Wiebe:

"Chaska is expected to go to flood stage on Saturday or Sunday. We plan on closing Outlet B, C, and D this weekend.

"At this time, we are not expecting any issues at Athletic Park or any road closures."
