On June 3, 1901 in Carver, Minnesota, Andrew Tapper, 34, stabbed his coworker Rosa Mixa, 18, to death. Tapper turned himself in and, following a trial, was sentenced to hang on Feb. 18, 1902 -- 109 years ago, as of 12:33 a.m. This video is the story of the murder and the execution. The Minnesota Historical Society's "Item of the Day," is one of my favorite web offerings.

Today's item is a fragment of a rope used to hang William Williams. in 1906 -- a few years after Andrew Tapper.

As the post, by Adam Harris, notes: "The grisly slowness of Williams’ death led to the abolishment of capital punishment in Minnesota."
