For many nonprofit volunteers, River City Days is a way to advertise their organization and earn some operating money.

One of the new groups in City Square Park is The Rolando Ochoa Fund for Latino Children with Cancer.

“We provide children with cancer in Ecuador with basic services such as treatment, medicines, blood transfusions, underwear, shoes, toys, crafts and other supplies,” reports organizer Maria Ochoa, who created the fund in honor of her late father.

During River City Days the group is giving hair feather extensions and temporary glitter tattoos in return for a free will dona-tion.

“All the funds collected will go to Instituto del Cancer SOLCA, hospital we work with. We have an oncologist, a physical thera-pist, and a nurse who are coming to do some observation and training at Children’s Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota at the end of September,” states Ochoa.

“We are hoping they will be able to bring back nausea and pain medicines as well as other medical supplies that do not exist or are difficult to find in Ecuador. Through this fundraiser we also hope to have enough money to help these three professionals with money for personal expenses while in Minnesota.”
