The new Chaska Historical Society exhibit is “Dealing with Disasters: Chaska’s response to Challenges.”

The exhibit will debut during River City Days at the Chaska History Center (just a stone’s throw away from City Square Park).

The exhibit showcases photos of Chaska’s past Minnesota River flood disasters. “We have all these photos of the flood and haven’t really done anything with them,” said Lisa Oberski, historical society volunteer.

Other than photos, collecting flood artifacts for the exhibit was a bit of a challenge since “everything in the flood was gone,” Oberski said.

However, the society was able to collect stories. “We incorporated lots of people’s experiences of the flood of 1965,” Oberski said of the flood, which left an estimated 1,000 Chaskans homeless.

Visitors will learn about “ducks in the living room” a “fish sandwich” and people who had to be carried out of their flood-zone homes.

Some residents who lived through the 1965 flood will be volunteering at the history center during River City Days, sharing their stories with visitors.

There will also be photos of past great disasters, such the 1925 tornado that ripped through Chaska, and the fires that burned down St. John’s Lutheran Church and Guardian Angels Catholic Church.

More important than the disasters, was how Chaska responded, Oberski said. “The people of Chaska have to be reminded of how they worked together during times of challenge.”
