Ben Johnson, a twelfth-grader at Holy Family Catholic High School in Victoria, recently appeared in a recent Chanhassen Dinner Theatres’ production of “Hairspray.”

The appearance in the Dinner Theatre’s popular musical was part of the theater’s “StarKids” program, where 100 high school students appeared on stage with the cast during November and January shows.

Johnson, the son of Mark and Susan Johnson of Chaska, was nominated for the honor by his teacher Christine Funk.

“It was a fantastic experience to meet professionals, see behind the scenes, and be a part of such a high-energy show. I would definitely recommend jumping at this opportunity if you have a chance. I’m glad I did!” Johnson stated in an e-mail.

The students shadowed professional actors onstage and backstage. The students also received their own dressing rooms. This is the second year of the program – the theater first held the program with its performance of “Footloose.”

Chanhassen Dinner Theatres contacted more than 100 high school music-theater teachers from Albert Lea to St. Cloud in the search for StarKids. The teachers were asked to send two students to participate in StarKid to represent the best talent their schools had to offer. In the end, 100 students participated.

For tickets and information call the theater box office at (952) 934-1525 or (800) 362-3515.
